Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art from her grandmother Denise. She was night nurses to afford her aunt to have the space she required during the day for the love of literature, art, and theater. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents, however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. In the year 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of broadcast journalism. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the house and examining the trash belonging to one of the jury. In the course of her tasks, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a young publicist for a studio. In this role, she launched her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
